We loved working with Ashley’s mom…and now I’ve had the pleasure of designing a room for Ashley too! Ashley’s mom did an amazing job sharing the importance of buying quality furniture with her daughter…even when you have a young family. Buying cheap furniture because you have young kids and are afraid they’ll ruin it, just means you’ll have to replace it more often!
Ashley had a sitting room in the front of her house that her family didn’t really use on a daily basis. She wanted this room to be comfortable and inviting, but still really eye-catching when you enter the home. Ashley wanted this room to be a place she can have the girls over for a cocktail, but still durable enough for family board game night.
The design aesthetic that Ashley and I discussed was a neutral color palette for the room, without too many heavy furniture pieces to make it feel cluttered and small. She had a cool bookcase that I wanted to repurpose in the room and a mantel that she wanted to display to decorate for the seasons. Ashley has fun taste and good design sense, so she just needed my help to pull together pieces that were the right scale and style.
I suggested the accent navy wall behind the fireplace – I knew it would make her mantel pop and be very eye-catching when guests first enter the home. Next, we decided to add two Pasha Ottomans in a great Crypton fabric. Crypton is a fabric that’s super easy to clean and stain resistant….perfect for the kids to pull up and play on.
I suggested moving the shelf next to the mantle to ground the space and creating another seating area. In that seating area we added two modern Natalie wingback chairs in a great tweed fabric. In between the wingback chairs is a great showcase table, which is the perfect place to display seasonal decor or a pretty collection. We added a custom sofa in a rich neutral texture accented with navy pillows.
In front of the sofa, I added nesting tables in reclaimed wood with iron bases – which is great because they can be moved around wherever you want. The nesting tables are two different heights, which adds a lot of visual interest to the space.
The room is both inviting and impactful…the fabrics are durable and Ashley also added an MFS insurance program so she doesn’t have to worry if anything does happen to the furniture. It’s so important to have beautiful furniture in a room that you can actually use and be proud of…no one needs a display room full of furniture that you’re afraid to use.
I just loved working with Ashley. After my initial floor plan and furniture selection presentation, she was so excited and said “I feel just like I’m on HGTV! It’s so special to have a room designed specifically for me and my family.” And I think that sums up what we do at by Design perfectly.
I’d love to help you design your room as well~ please call, email or stop in and ask for Laura!
