A lake home interior design project is a special thing. When Lori and I met, we just “clicked”. She told me they just bought and fell in love with a lake home in southern Iowa. It was everything they wanted in location and house style… but they really wanted it to feel like their own. She has 3 grandkids and wanted to make sure the materials we chose would not only look great, but perform well too! The whole goal was to make sure it was comfortable and practical and allow everyone carefree time at the lake.
Lori leans to a neutral palette. One where you could add an interesting rug or accent pillows to change the look over time. She also wanted to make sure that the lake view was the main focus. The furniture shouldn’t take away from that. (It’s tempting, when doing a lake home interior design project, to go all out with nautical references. But this home needed to be more sophisticated than that).
- The living room before felt a bit dark and heavy with matching brown leather pieces. We flipped the switch on the color balance, by bringing in 2 matching neutral Linkin sofas. This created a light and airy look that you expect at a home by the water.
- We changed texture in the leather recliners while still staying light in color.
- The rug and pillows pulled in deeper tones from the fireplace and made the space more grounded.
- The addition of the tall dark bookcase adds interest and plays off the height of the fireplace too.
- The interesting faceted coffee and end tables added interest and contrast to the lighter palette.
The dining table with its lighter top plays well off the floor. The base has a black contrast that sets it off on the neutral rug. The dark fabric Rachael chairs on the ends are on casters allowing them to flow into the seating area if needed. Flexibility helps in every home, and more so in lake home interior design.
Everyone gets a comfy swivel seat at the counter height island. The black metal base plays back to the beautiful stone on top.
I think we checked all the boxes on this project and ended up with a wonderful home away from home – at the lake.
