Jeff & Amy came to me to help with the interior design of their new Urban Retreat. They wanted it to be one of a kind and totally reflect their love of music. And they did this really cool thing: they bought an amazing Billie Holiday original piece of art. This piece would set the tone of the whole main living space. (Want to tell a great story? Here’s a perfect way to begin.)

As we talked, I noticed words they used to describe their dreams for their new home:
- Music-centered vibe, art-driven
- comfy, fun, funky, colorful
- modern – not afraid of color
And so we began. My goal was to help them create an interior design for their urban retreat that evokes modernity, music & color. Here is their presentation including mood boards. I included the Billie Holiday art work on each page so that we wouldn’t forget our story.

The Elements

The Rooms Before

How It All Came Together

We covered the Lawson sofa in deep blue, shimmery velvet. It looks and feels wonderful. The luster emphasizes the tufting cushion curves. The colorful pillows bring in all of the colors from the art in a beautiful hand-painted look. The Lawson offers an unbeatable combination of great designs and surprising comfort. Style-wise, this high-leg version helps with our urban retreat interior design goal.

The Living Room
We chose these beautiful Berger swivel chairs to go with the Lawson sofa. See their interesting back profile? They taper in at the bottom and top, giving a handsome, contemporary “nesting” feeling. The Bergers are covered in a black & white herringbone fabric. I think they add an interesting profile against the stairway.
The white marble cocktail table is a modern classic Tulip design. It adds a simplicity to the room. It enhances, rather than competes with, the Lawson sofa and the Berger chairs.
The dining area hosts that marvelous piece of art we’ve been raving about!

The Color Palette
In this room we used a very clean palette. We chose sleek, blacks & whites to showcase the breathtaking & colorful art. Not only are blacks & whites perfect for giving the artwork center stage, they’re perfect for conveying that urban interior design aesthetic we wanted.
The Dining Furniture
The ceramic top Omnia extension table with white ceramic marble top offers a neutral, but luxurious area to dine and entertain. I think the Lucas chairs and counter stools have a musical look to them in the stark black & white.
Amy and Jeff said they felt that we had totally captured the vibe they were after -and really highlighted their beautiful art too. To say they were in love with the finished design was an understatement!
