Customer Order Policy

The purpose of this Customer Order Policy is to align our expectations. We believe that open and honest communication is the foundation to great relationships.

ONE-OF-A-KIND PRODUCTS

Most BY DESIGN products are hand crafted. Given that artisanal, hand-finished nature, variations are to be expected. Each item is unique – not exactly alike. Images on our websites and items shown in our galleries will certainly vary from your actual piece.

SPECIAL ORDERS & DEPOSITS

Special orders are submitted for production soon after order placement and are built to your specifications. A non-refundable 50% deposit will be taken when the order is placed; the remaining 50% is due when your order arrives. If you choose to cancel your special order item(s) prior to delivery, your 50% deposit will not be refunded.

PRODUCT AVAILABILITY

Shipment and delivery of merchandise is estimated according to our recent experience. However, conditions change and problems occur that we cannot foresee. BY DESIGN cannot be responsible for delays in arrival or delivery of merchandise for any cause beyond its control.

We make every effort to provide the most current and accurate product availability information. We will notify you in the event that a product’s availability date changes.

RETURNS

Any item purchased from stock, except clearance merchandise, may be returned within 7 days of the original purchase date for a complete refund. After 7 days, a 25% restocking fee will be charged. Sorry, no in stock merchandise may be returned after 14 days from the date of purchase.

No returns or refunds on clearance items or cut yardage fabric.

PREPARING FOR FURNITURE DELIVERY

It is your responsibility to ensure that all furniture items will fit through any access points such as doorways, stairways, hallways, elevators and around corners into the desired location.

After your new furniture is inspected and prepared for delivery, we will contact you to schedule a delivery appointment. Every effort will be made to deliver your custom furniture within the time frame given you. If circumstances create a delay, you will be advised as quickly as possible. We will not, however, make price adjustments due to a delay in arrival or delivery.

Our warehouse space is limited. Please be prepared to accept delivery of your special order within 3 weeks of its arrival at our service center. A fee for storage will be incurred for each additional month beginning 30 days after arrival. Payment in full for furniture is due within the first 30 days after arrival. Payment for additional storage fees can be made at time of delivery.

The delivery service cannot move, haul or rearrange old furniture. BY DESIGN shall not be held responsible for any actions of the delivery service beyond the simple delivery of BY DESIGN merchandise.

SALES TAX EXEMPTIONS

If your furniture is delivered out of Iowa you may not have paid sales tax. However, your purchase may be subject to use tax unless it is specifically exempt from taxation. Your purchase is not exempt merely because it is made over the internet or by other remote means. Many states require purchasers to file a sales or use tax return at the end of the year to report taxable purchases that have not been taxed by the seller and pay tax on those purchases.

CUSTOMER PICK-UP

Orders may be picked-up, by appointment only. All merchandise will be inspected and prepared for our customers in the same manner as delivered merchandise. As a result, merchandise may not be in a carton or wrapped when you arrive to make your pick-up. You will be responsible for providing:

  • The materials required for safely transporting your furniture
  • Loading and securing the merchandise
  • You will also be responsible for its condition after it leaves
