Steampunk design. There is a buzz, but what does it mean?
Steampunk refers to any of the artistic styles, clothing fashions, or subcultures, that have developed from the aesthetics of steampunk fiction, Victorian-era fiction, art nouveau design, and films from the mid-20th century. Various modern utilitarian objects have been modded by individual artisans into a pseudo-Victorian mechanical “steampunk” style.
Most original Steampunk design is a brooding combination of dark colors and darker finishes. Luckily, Steampunk is maturing beyond it’s obsession with dark browns and bronze colors and overstuffed (and overwrought) upholstery and is moving into color and design ranges with broader appeal. Thank goodness. Steampunk’s wealth of detail and blend of finishes and materials is just too good to waste.
We plan to merchandise a group in by Design’s take on Steampunk this fall. And we know that many of you in our Des Moines audience will love it. We sure do.
