Interior Design with family in mind

Your home must be comfortable and functional.

Let’s get real for a minute, shall we? What you see below is my most recent family photo. A cleaned up, smiling and looking-put-together bunch, right? What you don’t see is the soda stain on my son’s shirt. You don’t see the mad disarray before we left for the photoshoot (from a sleepover with the boys the night before).

I am a designer. People expect a beautifully decorated home with fabulous functional furniture ready for guests at any time. Heck, I expect it. The reality is, with a family of boys our home is, as I call it, “lived in”. Unexpected messes happen from time to time. I must create interior design with my family in mind. So, I choose furniture that is easy-to-clean, durable, family & pet friendly in styles that can withstand a pack of wild animals. LOL!

I’ll bet you feel the same way.

Although I am a designer – and this is a profession I LOVE – I always put my home last on the list. No more. Last month I took measurements, drew out my floor plan and begin the designing a room that I would love.

But, as I explained at the beginning, interior design is about more than love. I always begin by asking my clients two critical questions:

1) Who will be utilizing this space?

2) Do you have pets and or children?

You’ve seen durability is a deal breaker in my home. My husband and I have two small dogs & two boys so a Crypton fabric by Norwalk was a MUST have. Plus, my soon to be 16 year old is almost 6’ 5″. We need furniture that accommodates that kind of height! Some Crypton features:

  • Crypton alleviates the need to use active solvents or other harsh cleaning solutions.
  • Ballpoint pen or permanent marker can be dry erased.
  • Tough food stains like ketchup and yellow mustard can be easily removed.
  • Topical antiseptics, lotions and creams that would stain conventional urethane upholstery forever are wiped away.
  • Regular cleanings and the removal of difficult stains will not damage nor diminish Crypton’s finish, performance or high-style appeal.

Family friendly interior design is still interior design!

I chose two of these Ana sofas (btw, this isn’t a pic of mine).

I chose fabric on the lighter side in color, that offers a soft, comfortable feel. This nice neutral fabric was the perfect choice when upholstering two new mid-century modern style sofas with crisp welts, a tight back and tapered splay legs.

The Brockton chair. Simple, yet elegant in leather.

We carefully selected a set of sleek and comfortable Brockton chairs by Norwalk Furniture in a textured butterscotch leather with a rich tobacco finish. These pieces warm up our space a bit while offering additional seating for both men and women. And let’s not forget the accent pillows! They are so much fun! I ordered two feather & down pillows in a fantastic faux fur! My boys don’t share the same appreciation for decorative pillows as I do, however they do love how soft they are.

The fabrics I used in my room. I love them.

Comfort meets style here at BY DESIGN. We don’t believe you have to sacrifice one for the other. I am so eager to continue to customize our space with additional pieces that fit our family’s style. Pieces that are also functional and durable for the “wild animals” in my life! 🙂

I would be honored to work with you and your family on your next update/renovation.
