Color of the Year 2016 : Rose Quartz and Serenity

What Do You Think?

As the new year is approaching, it’s interesting to see what will be the trending colors for interior design. For the first time, Pantone is has two different shades for the color of the year for 2016. Rose Quartz is a blush pink, Serenity is a light blue-periwinkle. This is for all types of design (fashion, interior, etc.). I think both of these colors mix well together and it’s one of my favorite color combinations. Put together they remind me of an opal stone, sometimes it looks blush pink and sometimes it looks more blue, which makes it very unique.

Pantone picked both of these colors for color of the year to symbolize the mixing of masculine and feminine influences in design. People are becoming more comfortable showing off their personal sense of style, which reflects these bright colors. As Pantone states “Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace.” For interior spaces, these colors will reflect a calm setting with a sense of well-being. That being said, these colors would be particularly good in a bedroom for bedding, paint colors drapes, artwork, and more. You can also use these colors in so many ways throughout your home including upholstery, throw pillows, rugs, and accessories.

Rose Quartz and Serenity are not the entire palette

We don’t live in a two-tone interior design world. We haven’t for years. These two colors are simply part of a larger palette. And that’s where the magic lies. Here are the top 10 other trending Pantone colors:top ten popular colors 2016

Below is an illustration of the huge color range that we are really talking about. Everything changes when you see these colors as part of a larger, richer story.

I’ve been asked what colors are popular right now. I would say the colors that are “in” for upholstery are warmer shades of gray, any shade of blue, lighter shades of red/pink, creams, and greens. It’s also very in to mix different finishes-golds and silvers.

It’s fun to see different colors and styles evolve and see what is in style. But it’s also fun to use some of these and add your own spin on style to your unique room. Don’t be afraid to branch out! And who knows, maybe your unique style or color combination will become the start of the trend for the new year.
