It’s never too early to start thinking about furniture

Please don’t wait until the last minute to start thinking about furniture for your new house!  Many people feel like they need to wait to start thinking about furniture because it can be overwhelming to do everything at once.

And I agree, it can be very overwhelming, but that is what we are here for.  As designers it is our job to help through this process and relieve you from the stress.  If you wait until the last minute to think about furniture time starts to become an issue and you might not get what you truly want.amy_room_before_design

Amy and Jim were working on building their new home when Amy came into by Design to get ideas for her living room.  She was in the very beginning of the design process.  She was thrilled to hear about our design services and — despite their early stage — wanted to get started right away.amys_sofa

Since Amy was still so early in the design process, she was unsure about the colors she wanted to use.  But, she knew she wanted to use neutral furniture to blend into the background and accessories and art for the pops of color.amy_chair

Amy had an inspiration photo which helped a lot in deciding colors and fabrics.  We went with a taupe/grey for the sofa and loveseat.  We kept the chairs and ottoman neutral as well – but went with fun patterns to add a little variety.amy_sofa_loveseat

After we got the big pieces in the room we went back to think about what colors would add that pop of personality to the room.  We knew there needed to be a rug to ground the furniture.  Rugs are a great way to add that color!  Plus they are easy to switch out if you ever want to change it up.  Amy was really attracted to teals.  She wanted something simple so it wouldn’t compete with the ottoman and chairs but also something with a little visual interest.  After looking through our rug books I found a teal tone-on-tone rug that was simple – but had enough of a pattern to make it interesting.amy_living_room

Because Amy and Jim started thinking about their furniture ahead of time it was easier for them to make other design decisions such as paint color and tile for their fireplace.  Plus, she was glad she ordered when she did so it could be delivered when the construction was done.

I had a blast working with Amy and love how her room turned out!
